Asbestos Testing
Don’t risk it, get it tested
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is made up of fibres 200x thinner than a human hair, which are invisible to the naked eye. The two main types of asbestos are friable (loosely bound) and non-friable (bonded).
Australia started manufacturing asbestos cement materials in the 1920s. These materials were commonly used in residential building from the 1940s through to 1990. Asbestos was not completely banned in Australia until 2003.
Bakers & Co have our own licensed asbestos removalist who will take an asbestos test sample before we start painting your home.

Rules & regulations around painting asbestos
Before getting any painting works done in your home, determine whether there is a chance that asbestos could be present.
To ensure the health of your family, ensure that any tradesman you engage will get the suspected substrate tested to determine the presence of asbestos; and if it’s not tested, that they treat it as if it is.
Do not let any old painter come in and start working on your peeling surfaces without testing, as there is a high chance that they’ll start sanding or waterblasting, exposing themselves, your family and your neighbours to the asbestos fibres.
The Queensland government’s code of practice on how to manage and control asbestos states “under no circumstance should asbestos be water blasted or dry sanded in preparation for painting, coating or sealing, as there is no system of use that can effectively capture or suppress asbestos fibres in such circumstances.
Where is asbestos usually found in the home?
Asbestos was wildly popular throughout the Australian building industry until the 1990s, with the complete ban not coming into effect until 2003. During this time, asbestos was used to manufacture numerous substrates throughout the home.
When it comes to residential painting across Queensland, we come across a lot of homes that fit into the timeline of asbestos containing materials. As painters, our most common occurrences with asbestos arise in external soffits and gables, and internal wall and ceiling linings.
Trust Bakers & Co with asbestos testing
We give all clients the option of having an asbestos test sample, by our licensed asbestos removalist.
This test is conducted before we begin any preparation works, to ensure that we are not risking disturbing asbestos materials, exposing your household or our workers.
If an asbestos containing material is being painted, any preparation works must not generate dust – e.g. flaking paint cannot be sanded away.
Do your research on the company you’re considering, make sure they follow safety protocols. At Bakers & Co our internal health and safety procedures ensure that we do not touch any suspect surfaces before testing, and if testing isn’t done, we treat it as if it is asbestos.
Treat it as if it’s asbestos
Asbestos has the potential to be a significant threat to one’s wellbeing if dealt with incorrectly. If there is suspected asbestos and it has not been tested, it is imperative that it is treated as if it is asbestos. At Bakers & Co, we are licensed WHSEO professionals and can do the hard work for you, by taking a sample of the suspected asbestos and testing it prior to commencing painting works.
Don't Forget
- We will take a sample for you and test prior to commencing painting works
- If suspected and not tested, treat as if it is
- Results of the test determine the legal, safe preparation methods that can be undertaken
